Kalanggaman Island – One of the best sandbars in the Philippines

Kalanggaman Island is one of the most beautiful beach destination in the Philippines. This island is famous of its sandbars and remote island getaway.

Kalanggaman Island is located in Palompon, Leyte. It is a 2 hour drive from Ormoc and 3-4 hours away from Tacloban City.

We initially planned to go to Kalanggaman Island from Tacloban City. After searching from the internet and locals’ recommendations, we headed first to Ormoc City. Mom might be too exhausted after a 3-4 hours drive then boat ride to Kalanggaman Island. There are more public transportation in Ormoc going to Palompon than in Tacloban City as well. Ormoc is a breather if you have longer days to stay in Leyte.

How did we get there? From our hostel in Ormoc, it will be a 10 minute walk to the van terminals. We arrived before 5 AM at the terminal. After filling in the entire van and some vehicle repair, we left Ormoc by 5: 30 AM. We arrived at Palompon by 7:30 AM.

Mind to book a reservation before going to Kalanggaman Island. You may contact Ms. Mae 0906 9753053. She is one of the members of the Barangay in Palompon. Since it is not summer or peak season, there will be higher chances to do walk-in visit at Kalanggaman. Yet, for comfort and no hassle, I still contact their Barangay for reservation.

A round trip boat costs Php 3,000. Luckily, there is a group of 5 friends going to Kalanggaman Island too. We shared the boat with them. We wished to look for more passengers as boat can accommodate at least 15 people. Yet the barangay peeps told us that they can allow 2 groups only in a boat. They explained that boats are owned by private individuals/ businessmen and this is their policy.Β  After doing some calculations, we started to sail.

Locals said that it will be 30 to 40 minutes boat ride from Palompon proper to Kalanggaman Island. But remember it is BER months, with bigger waves. It took us 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach the island.

Where did we stay? Since we opted a day tour in Kalanggaman Island, we rented a cottage. We also shared this to the other group. The cottage can is good for 7-9 pax. There are also additional 2 plastic tables and monoblock chairs. Since we will not stayed the whole day in the cottage, we chose this one. There are cottage that can accommodate 20 pax.

If you wanted to stay in Kalanggaman Island overnight, you can bring your own tent. There are also tents for rent. Plus, you have to bring food. There is a small variety store but it sells junk foods only. There is no electricity on the island too. Restrooms and changing area are available. When we are in island, there is no clean water to have shower.

We reached Kalanggaman Island by 10:30 AM. After all the big waves, we Β were like dipped into the water. But after seeing the Kalanggaman Island afar, everyone on the boat is mesmerized. The boat ride is worth it! πŸ™‚

We had a snack then to fill in our stomachs but definitely our eyes are filled with joy. Kalanggaman Island is truly one of the best in the beaches in the Philippines!

Mom is amazed of how beautiful Kalanggaman Island is. I think this was the first time for the longest time that she went on a beach. This is the longest boat ride she had! We enjoyed the water too!

More snacks to go! The other side of Kalanggaman Island is owned by a private company. Though, tourists can visit it too, soon enough this will be developed as a resort. Too bad that I want the island to stay as remote as it is.

The caretaker of the resort told us that it owned by a businessman from Tacloban City. The sandbar on the other side of the island is smaller. Kuya Caretaker told that it was devastated by Typhoon Yolanda too. Though, this side has fewer tourist, more serene.

Summer may be the best time to visit Kalanggaman Island. Nevertheless, the experience with Mom is surreal. I am happy that Mom enjoyed it!

20161203_100929Time to say goodbye. We have to catch up the van going back to Ormoc City. It will be better to stay overnight, gaze over the stars. But good thing is was cloudy that day, ok lang kahit hindi makapag-overnight. Sulit it is!!! πŸ™‚

dscf3146-1At around 3 PM, our boat arrived. We were happy that waves were calmer. It took us 30 minutes to return in Palompon proper. We also drop by at Palompon Church. It was a coincidence at as we arrived on their town feast day.

We returned in Ormoc City by 6 PM.

Here is how much we spent in our DIY Kalanggaman Island day tour,
